This department will mainly concentrate on renewable energy sector and coal firing power. Energy can be generated from domestic and commercial waste. Countries like Norway and Sweden have perfected their research in biofuels and have gone to the extent of importing waste for biomass.

Deliberate efforts will be made towards promotion of portable biogas units and a case study be conducted at the main market for a biomass power station. On large tracks of land, Jatropha Cacus can be grown to promote fuel production like in southern Americas where diesel and kerosene is obtained from farm inputs.

Wind and solar power will be researched and production be conducted when viable. The lower zone has at least eight hours of sunlight per day most of the year. This is favorable for companies that can harness stand alone units, say in villages. Already several companies have expressed interest in this venture. A lot of wind energy in Buguta, Mgeno and other corridors in the county can be tapped and the power supplied for domestic needs. This has happened in Turkana and Kajiado and we can emulate the same.

Immediate undertakings will include;

  • Conduct biomass feasibility in major institutions and towns to quantify sorted biodegradable content
  • Carry out wind strength tests in promising zones county wide with partners
  • Invite solar experts to propose modes of future energy farms in settled localities
  • Liaise with rural electrification organ in mapping out areas of immediate demand for power connectivity
